Paintings Use Art & Science to Explore Cancer

PICColina founder Katie Murphy often turned to art to express what she was experiencing on her journey through cancer.  Now she has decided to take a deeper look at the disease through a series of paintings she is doing as part of her Junior year studies at Chapman University. Motivated by her first-hand experience with cancer, the artistic journey is through the eyes of a young woman interested in the science behind cancer and how it develops within the body.  …

PICColina Founder Raises $21,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

This past spring Katie Murphy and her supporters were working hard to raise money and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She was honored as a candidate for  the LLS 2013 Woman of the Year and managed to raise over $21,000 for this important cancer research and support organization.

Beyond its own mission of helping young cancer patients, the PICColina Foundation is committed to helping raise awareness and money for other cancer focused organizations.

Chapman University Website Features Katie Murphy and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Work

The Chapman University interactive web site,  “Happenings,” recently featured Sophmore Katie Murphy in an editorial that highlighted her efforts to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as part of her candidacy for LLC 2013 Woman of the Year.  The article also featured Katie’s work with the PICColina Foundation, and gave her a chance to show off some of the foundation’s efforts.

There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes toward allowing the foundation to serve more hospitals with covers, so stay tuned for more updates soon on that front.

At long last, those of you who have been asking about a way to donate on-line can now show your support for The PICColina Foundation by visiting our new donation page. You will find the page listed in the upper menu bar on every page of the website.

The 2011 PICColina Fundraiser Rocked!

Well, it's official...The PICColina Foundation fundraiser was a great success! It was incredibly heartwarming to see how many of you turned out to support Katie Murphy and the Foundation. All we can say is THANK YOU so much for helping to get this worthwhile effort off the ground.

KGO Morning News Interviews Katie Murphy

Katie Murphy was interviewed this morning on the KGO Morning News (KGO Newstalk AM 810) by anchors Ed Baxter and Jennifer Jones Lee, where she talked about the inspiration behind The PICColina Foundation and her efforts to provide kids in cancer treatment with free PICC covers that offer a more fun (and comfortable) alternative to the standard hospital fare. 

Argus Courier Features PICColina Fund-Raiser

The March 3rd edition of the Argus Courier features a story about the upcoming PICColina fund-raiser. In the article, writer Yovanna Beiberich interviews Katie about her inspiration to create personalized PICC covers during her own cancer treatments and how she is now working to make them available to other children at Bay Area hospitals through The PICColina Foundation. 

PICColina Fundraiser Set for April 1st, 2011

The PICColina Foundation is holding a fundraiser on Friday, April 1st at 7 pm at the Mill Valley Community Center. The fundraiser will benefit The PICColina Foundation's efforts to improve the experience of young patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments. Plans are afoot to make this a fun and dynamic event, with the details of this creative evening to be revealed shortly; so check back soon for more information.

PICC Covers Distributed to Young Oncology Patients

Palo Alto, California - Wednesday, October 20, 2010 – Seeing the smiles on the faces of young cancer patients and sharing stories of the ups and downs of chemo treatments, Katie Murphy, of The PICColina Foundation, distributed her first assortment of colorful PICC covers to patients at Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto.

Locks of Love Fundraiser Success Despite Weather.

A cold drizzle did not seem to deter the folks that showed up for the annual Peggy Sue's All American Country Classic where Katie Murphy was participating in the Locks of Love fundraiser.  

Katie and other volunteers helped cut the hair of donors who were willing to give up their long locks for a good cause.
